Asthma Treatment and Therapy Options

Partnering with a medical specialist to help understand and manage your asthma is a critical step to keeping it under control. Dr. Jackson partners with adults, adolescents, and young children to determine the severity level of your asthma and provide a personalized treatment and therapy plan to best address the type and symptoms you experience. Though asthma can be controlled, patients live with it lifelong, so it is important to understand how this does and will continue to affect your health. Your initial appointment and evaluation will allow our team to obtain a comprehensive medical history that will help us in determining the best course of treatment.

Since asthma symptoms vary from person to person, so too does the method in which we go about treating it. Treatment plans can encompass therapies ranging from trigger avoidance, specialized diet, and controlled exercise to medications suited for quick-action relief or long-term control of your symptoms.

  • Inhalers (Quick-Relief and Long-Term Control)

Inhalers are a common, portable way to administer medication to a patient and are designed for a variety of situations.

Short-Acting Beta 2-Agonists are inhalers that are intended to act quickly, when patients are experiencing an asthma attack. These inhalers help to relax the muscles in your airway.

Long-Acting Beta2-Agonist, along with Inhaled Corticosteroid and Long-Acting Muscarinic Antagonist inhalers are designed for long-term control. These serve to prevent swelling of the airways and relax muscles around the airways. Patients typically combine use of one or more of these types of inhalers. Dr. Jackson will assess and determine the appropriate medications to deliver a safe and effective treatment of your symptoms.

  • Nebulizers

A nebulizer treatment is administered via a fine mist delivered through a mask worn over the mouth and nose. This can be an easier alternative to inhalers for infants or younger children.

  • Oral Controller Medications

There are also a variety of oral medications in tablet and/or liquid form that can be take to control symptoms of asthma. These can include:

    • Leukotriene Modifiers
    • Oral Corticosteroids
    • Theophylline
  • Injections

Whether you suffer from severe asthma or are not seeing results from inhaled or oral medications, another option is a biologic injection. These target specific antibodies and immune system cells to keep them from responding and causing lung inflammation. Biologics are typically reserved for more severe asthma sufferers and are administered at a frequency depending on which medication is supplied.
